Winter Fuel Payment

At Phinch, we are up to date on the Winter Fuel Payment. The Winter Fuel Payment is a UK government benefit designed to help with heating costs during the colder winter months.

If you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, you could receive between £100 and £300 for winter 2026 to 2027. Most eligible individuals receive the payment automatically and should receive a letter in October or November confirming the amount payable. Payments are generally made in November or December.

The amount of Winter Fuel Payment depends on your age, living arrangements and whether you receive certain means-tested benefits. In many cases, individuals under the age of 80 receive £200, while those ages 80 or over receive £300. However, where more than one eligible person lives in the same household, the payment may be split, resulting in lower individual amounts. Different rates can also apply for care home residents and certain benefit claimants. If you live in Scotland, you do not receive a Winter Fuel Payment. Instead, you may be eligible for the Scottish Government’s Pension Age Winter Heating Payment. Eligibility broadly applies to individuals over state pension age with income below £35,000. Payments range from approximately £100 to £305 depending on circumstances.

Changes To Be Aware Of

Under the current rules, individuals with total income above £35,000 will have their Winter Fuel Payment clawed back by the HMRC. Recovery will generally be made either through PAYE tax code adjustments or through self-assessment.
